Where the Trail Boss Name Started

The badge isn’t new. It debuted on the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Trail Boss, a new trim level that arrived a full year before the Colorado ZR2 hit showrooms. It combined the Z71 package’s off-road equipment (lifted suspension, locking rear differential, hill-descent control, tow hooks, low-range four-wheel drive) with several visual upgrades, including sidesteps, fender flares, a bedliner, and unique rims. After a brief pause, the package returned in 2019 with the fourth-generation Chevy Silverado 1500.

The idea was simple. Slot a midrange off-roader between the standard Z71 and the hardcore ZR2, give it some attitude, and price it within reach of buyers who want trail capability without the top-tier sticker.

The Full Trail Boss Family Today

The Chevy Trail Boss family brings trail-ready credentials and daily-driver comfort to every pickup Chevy builds, including the midsize Colorado, full-size Silverado and Silverado HD, and the recently introduced Silverado EV to round out the lineup.

Colorado Trail Boss: The entry point. It packs a 2-inch factory-installed lift, 310 horsepower, 430 lb-ft of torque, a 2-speed transfer case, off-road suspension, all-terrain tires, and an off-road performance display. Think of it as the gateway truck for weekend explorers.

Silverado 1500 Trail Boss: Available in two flavors. The Custom Trail Boss features a 2-inch factory lift, Z71 suspension, Autotrac 2-speed transfer case, Z71 skid plates, automatic locking rear differential, and MT tires. The LT Trail Boss steps up the interior tech with a 13.4-inch diagonal touchscreen and a 12.3-inch reconfigurable Driver Information Center.

Silverado HD Trail Boss: The heavy hitter. This heavy-duty legend brings serious capability to the trails with Z71 shocks and suspension components, Z71 skid plates, a 2-speed transfer case, automatic locking rear differential, and off-road tires, because the good times only really begin where the paved road ends.

Silverado EV Trail Boss: The newest member. The available PowerBase system lets the first-ever Silverado EV Trail Boss provide offboard power through up to six 120V outlets and a 240V outlet, adding an electrified way to explore the outdoors.

Custom vs. LT: Picking Your Silverado Trail Boss

Both trims share the same off-road bones, but the differences matter. The Custom Trail Boss, ordered as-is, gets a black grille for a rugged appearance paired with 18-inch high-gloss black-painted aluminum wheels, plus eye-catching red recovery hooks that come in handy if you’re ever in a jam.

The LT Trail Boss looks a bit different. It skips the black grille in favor of simple black mesh grille inserts, gets the classic bowtie emblem in black, and adds other black accenting on the mirror caps and door handles. Power-wise, the Trail Boss comes standard with the TurboMax engine making 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed transmission. Step up to the LT and you can also opt for the 6.2L V8.

Special Editions That Stack On Top

Chevy doesn’t stop at trim levels. Several appearance packages layer onto the Trail Boss for extra personality.

Midnight Edition: Dark and dramatic, the Silverado Midnight Edition has a cool, commanding presence on city streets and is available on Custom Trail Boss, LT Trail Boss, and High Country models. Expect blacked-out badging, grille, and 18-inch black wheels.

Realtree Edition: Only the Custom Trail Boss is available in the Realtree Special Edition, which pairs rugged design details with off-road capabilities. Realtree trucks get striking exterior graphics resembling tree bark on the rear, a spray-on bedliner with the Realtree logo, a dual-outlet exhaust with black rectangular tips, and Realtree design touches inside, including graphics on the door handles and other camo elements.

Z71 Sport and other appearance packs: Many Trail Boss buyers also add badges, graphics, and wheel upgrades to make their truck stand out from the next one parked at the trailhead.

Picking the Right Trail Boss for the Way You Drive

If you want a smaller footprint and easier maneuvering on tight trails, the Colorado Trail Boss makes sense. Need full-size space and towing? The Silverado 1500 Custom or LT Trail Boss covers most weekend warriors. Hauling a fifth wheel into the backcountry? The HD steps up. And if you’re curious about going electric without giving up dirt-road duty, the Silverado EV Trail Boss is now part of the conversation. Whatever the use case, the badge promises the same recipe: a factory lift, real off-road hardware, and styling that earns a second look in the parking lot.
